Fears of H1N1, or Swine Flu, led to the closure of more than 700 schools across the United States in the spring of 2009. With cold/flu season rapidly approaching, schools are taking precautions by preparing in advance for the return of students and the inevitable return of H1N1. Information gathered after initial outbreaks shows that in many cases, it makes more sense for schools to remain open, which is also the hope of government officials.
School nurses, as well as classroom teachers and school officials should continue to reinforce lessons about the importance of hand washing, covering coughs, and using the “Dracula Sneeze” (cough or sneeze into your elbow) technique.
Education on germ prevention and hand washing are key to inhibiting the spread of the virus. Placing hand washing posters in bathroom facilities can help remind students and faculty of the importance of proper hand washing. For areas where soap and water are not available, hand sanitizers are a recommended alternative. Some schools plan to use face masks for students who are suspected to have the flu virus. N95 masks are recommended by the CDC for caregivers like the school nurse.
If your school will be administering vaccinations, supplies like gloves, alcohol prep pads and sharps disposal containers will be necessary. |
