Introduction

Dermabond is a topical skin adhesive that can be used in place of stitches or staples to close wounds or incisions. By applying Dermabond, wounds can be closed very quickly. Since it can be used in place of stitches, treating and caring for wounds may be less traumatic. Dermabond is the only medical grade adhesive that has been approved by the FDA for the topical closure of lacerations and incisions.

Product Overview and Description
Dermabond offers a secure skin closure alternative for easily approximated skin edges of surgical incisions and lacerations that otherwise would be closed with sutures, staples or skin strips. Dermabond is spread on top of the wound while the skin edges are held together. It dries to form a strong, flexible bond and protective covering for the cut. Dermabond sheds from the skin during the incision-healing period (usually seven to ten days), so there is no need for suture removal as there is with stitches. Dermabond represents a major advance in the treatment of wounds and incisions. It has many advantages over stitches and staples such as: faster closure time, less need for local anesthesia, elimination suture/staple removal, favorable cosmetic results. Bandages and dressings are optional because Dermabond forms its own protective "dressing" over the wound. In addition, the patient can shower or bathe immediately.

Product Use and Procedure
Uses
Dermabond is ideal for use on most areas of the body except in areas where the skin is stretched or pulled (like a knee or an elbow). It is generally not used in hairy areas or in the mouth. It should be used with caution around the eyes. The treated wound should have even and straight, not jagged or torn, edges.

Application
After the wound has been cleaned, Dermabond should be lightly applied in at least three thin layers, as the edges of the wound are held together. As the Dermabond is applied, it begins to form a strong, flexible bond, and reaches full strength in approximately two and a half minutes. As the wound heals, Dermabond wears off the skin, with complete healing usually occurring in seven to ten days.

Caring for Wounds Treated with Dermabond
Dermabond allows the health care professional and the patient to easily check the appearance and condition of the wound while it is healing. During the healing process, the wound should be kept dry and protected. The patient should be instructed not to scratch, rub or pick at the Dermabond in order to prevent the film from becoming loose. Showering and bathing are permissible, but the wound shouldn't be soaked. The patient should refrain from swimming and/or any activities that cause heavy perspiration as well as prolonged exposure to sunlight or tanning lamps. Although Dermabond can eliminate the need for bandages and dressings, some patients may prefer to use it as a protective covering. If a dressing is used, it should not be taped directly over the Dermabond because the removal of the tape could also remove the Dermabond. Also, bandages that get wet should be immediately replaced. Liquid or ointment medications should be avoided because they could loosen the film before the wound is healed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where can Dermabond be applied?
A: Dermabond can be used on any area of the body where movements won't repeatedly stretch on the wound. These areas include the face, legs, arms, chest, back, shoulder, and scalp wherever hair is not present. The wound should have even, straight edges. Dermabond is not recommended for joints, knees or elbows, or areas where dense hair exists.

Q: Can Dermabond be used near the eyes?
A: Yes, but special care must be taken in this area. The eye should be covered during application and face positioned so that adhesive "runoff" does not get near or in the eye.

Q: What if Dermabond drips where it's not supposed to?
A: If Dermabond has accidentally drips in the wrong spot, there is a window of approximately 45 seconds to wipe it away. If more than 45 seconds pass, petroleum jelly or acetone can safely remove the Dermabond.

Q: Why is Dermabond purple?
A: A non-toxic purple coloring is added to Dermabond so that the practioneer can see that it is ready to be applied. Also, children often find the purple color pleasant and non-threatening.

Q: Will there be a scar after using Dermabond?
A: The cosmetic results from using Dermabond are similar, if not better, to those from stitches. Plus, there aren't the noticeable "track marks" that come from sutures.

Q: Will a child be able to "pick off" Dermabond?
A: Dermabond forms a very secure bond, and cannot be easily picked off. However, as with any wound or incision, children should be instructed not to touch the wound until it has fully healed. Dermabond will naturally shed off as the wound heals.

Q: What makes Dermabond better than Super Glue in the Athletic Training industry?
A: Some adhesives contain shorter alkyl chain derivatives of cyanoacrylates (methyl, ethyl) that tend to be tissue toxic as they break down quickly. Their breakdown products, cyanoacetate and formaldehyde, can cause inflammatory reactions. This is why short chain derivatives are limited to products for non-medicinal purposes. Dermabond's name is 2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate, which is an FDA-approved "skin glue." It forms a safe, secure covering for wounds or incisions.

Customer Testimonials
"For physicians, Dermabond makes closing a surgical incision faster and simpler, compared to sutures. For patients, this innovation in skin closure resulted in excellent scar outcomes and eliminated the trauma of suture removal."
