I would also encourage screeners to go into the rooms frequently so that they're not a stranger." - Corinne Nelson, R.N.

Hosts Amy Garcia and Yasmina Vinci talk with Jennifer Dakers, M.A., CCC-A and Corinne Nelson, R.N. about effectively screening young children for hearing. The discussion includes common challenges in hearing screening programs and how to overcome them.

9 Tips For Maintaining Your Audiometer:

  1. Calibrate audiometers per the manufacturer's instructions, typically annually.
  2. Never switch one headset with another unit. They are calibrated as a unit.
  3. Turn off unit when not in use.
  4. If unit uses batteries, remove them when unit will be stored for several weeks.
  5. Leave phone cord attached to unit when storing. If you need to remove, pull by the barrel of cord and not by the cord itself.
  6. When storing the headset, gently wrap phone cord around head band and avoid making any sharp bends to the cords.
  7. Avoid mechanical shock of ear phones by not dropping them or banging them together.
  8. Dust the audiometer occasionally with a soft dry cloth.
  9. Ear phone cushions can be removed and cleaned with a mild soap. Make sure they are completely dry before installing back on ear phones.
