SpellRead combines intensive phonemic and phonetic activities with leveled readers and trade books to build students' reading comprehension. One-year, small-group reading intervention designed for students who are more than two years behind grade level, students with learning differences, and English language learners. Research-based instructional materials are specifically created to meet the needs of struggling readers. Program focuses on phonological automaticity and reading fluency while providing comprehension and vocabulary instruction and opportunities for writing Once through SpellRead, students will have the skills they need to improve overall comprehension, and can confidently advance to more complex texts in all content areas.
Multi-sensory approach builds a student’s sound system and then bridges it with students’ oral language to build automaticity and trains the brain to efficiently process language read for understanding. Provides a clear path for students to master phonological automaticity and to become efficient and expert readers.
Combines intensive phonemic and phonetic instruction activities with leveled readers and award-winning trade books to build students' reading comprehension. Within each lesson, SpellRead progresses sequentially through three phases of instruction, A, B, and C with comprehensive and clear, step-by-step instruction.
This intensive intervention model is designed for groups of five students with one certified teacher or paraprofessional, ideally in a 60 to 90 minute instructional block.
Daily instructional cycle includes:
Built-in assessment tools monitor progress in each element of the instructional cycle, critical for student success. Speed Reading checks student progress in gaining automaticity with the skills learned and practiced in Linguistic Foundations. A Fluency Rubric is provided to evaluate students as they read aloud during Active Reading. A Writing Proficiency Rubric monitors student progress on four basic traits: conventions, sentence fluency, organization, and ideas and content.
Skills progress systematically with 105 lessons divided in to three phases: A, B, and C. All students start with the first lesson of Phase A and progress systematically from simple to more complex sounds and words.
Active reading builds fluency. Students read aloud daily from relevant and engaging books. They are able to synthesize and apply the skills they have been learning. The goal of active reading is to build students' fluency and to improve overall comprehension while building oral language.
Teacher's Manual forms the core of the SpellRead materials. The manual contains focused, step-by-step instructions and detailed activities for each lesson in Phases A, B, and C. Planning and organizational aids include lists of required materials for every lesson; visuals and graphics show how all materials are integrated; word lists, syllable lists and spelling lists are located at point-of-use; and expected student responses are provided for every teacher prompt.
Teacher Materials Set includes Teacher's Manuals for Phase A, Phase B,and Phase C; Teacher's Resource Book; Supplemental Lessons and Activities for Remediation; Answer Keys for Phase A, Phase B, and Phase C.
