Medication Safety Practices at School: Addressing Challenges for the School Nurse

Barbara Smith, MS

Barbara has over 30 years of experience in training development in health, education and human services. She worked for twenty years at the Center for Disabilities and Development at the University of Iowa, and has worked with school nurses around the country to develop online resources to promote medication safety in the school setting for the past ten years. Her business, SchoolMeds.com, has been used by nurses to train over 60,000 school staff who assist with medication administration. She has a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology from Southern Illinois University and a BA in English from Brown University.

Phil Johnson, MA, RPh, FASHP

Phil is the clinical pharmacist representative to the Florida School Health and Education Consortium, (SHEC) where he focuses on medication safety and compliance in the school system. He is the author of Medication Use in Schools, a nationally distributed resource that won him an award from the Institute for Safe Medication Practice. He served for 26 years as the founding Director of Pharmacy and later Pharmacy Advocacy Director at the Moffit Cancer Center and Research Institute. He is currently the Oncology Director for Premier Inc.
