Product Use/Directions Use Picture Cards to Teach Key Language Concepts

Picture Cards are one of the best tools to aid in communication and teaching key language concepts, whether your student is verbal or non-verbal. If learners have limited speech capacity, the picture cards help them learn the words for the represented objects or actions. If learners are nonverbal, picture cards provide a valuable means of communication.

Having cards available to prompt language is a great tool. The more opportunities provided for your student to communicate the better. Picture cards are very versatile and can be used effectively by learners of all ages.

Using picture cards is one basic and concrete vocabulary building tool along with fostering receptive and expressive language. These cards are also ideal for higher learning, including functions, storytelling and more. Physical interaction with the cards can facilitate retention of the information.

Also use picture cards to learn adjectives or descriptive words. For example, “the apple is red” or “the plate is round”.

Picture cards also provide an opportunity to practice “Wh” questions. Show your student a picture and ask “What color is the fish?” “Where would you find a plate?”

Use picture cards to continue to build language with storytelling. Show your student a familiar picture card and ask them to tell a story about the picture.

Picture cards can be used to improve attention, language and observation skills, and develop emotional literacy.
