The curriculum notebook, interactive exercises, and videos developed for each of the lessons engages students in recognizing and accepting mental illness as a disease that needs treatment like any other. By dispelling the stigma through education and healthy interchange in the school environment, students are more willing to come forward and seek help from the school counseling department who, in partnership with MHAGC, may refer those students for mental health services in their school or community.
L2LTM includes additional modules equipping the students with tools to become healthier mentally, emotionally and socially. Students learn about the reality of diversity and the benefit of appreciating, instead of disregarding those who are different. Cultural sensitivity, awareness of varying behavioral styles/temperaments, and gay/lesbian/transgender/bisexual challenges are some of the topics. Alcohol and drug use prevention and the role of nutrition in mental health are also incorporated.
