Fun with Fractions

A fun way to learn about fractions!

Grade Level: 2-5

Equipment:

Set-up #1 (for full class)

On one half of the gym, scatter the cut pool noodles. Choose 2 people to guard the noodles. Give every other student a Super Strap to wear. Set a timer for 3 minutes. how to play: When the teacher says go, all Super Strap wearers try to run to the other side and grab one noodle piece to bring back to their side, without losing their flag. You are not safe anywhere on that side of the gym.  Once you return back to your side, you put the noodle piece on the end line. You keep playing until the 3 minutes is up.  At that point, your team will add up the noodle pieces, stacking up the smaller pieces to equal 1. What is your grand total? Play again and beat that total. Choose new taggers (flag pullers).

Set-up #2 (for 6 teams)

Put all the noodle pieces in the center circle. Put 6 hoops equally around the perimeter of the gym, and split the students onto teams. Choose one team to guard the circle and give them pinnies to wear. The taggers have to stay in the circle. Set a timer for 3 minutes. how to play: When the teacher says go, all flag belt wearers try to run to the circle and steal one piece of pool noodle to bring back to their hoop, without losing their flag. You are not safe in the circle, or even near it. If you can steal a piece, you bring it back to your hoop and go again. If you lose your flag, either before or after you steal a piece, you take it back, go back to your hoop, put it on, and try again. After 3 minutes, stop the game and ask the students to return to their hoop and add up their pieces. Stack them so they equal 1. What is your grand total? Whichever team has the most can be the next taggers.  variations: Travel to other side or circle using different locomotors.

Math Frenzy

Math Frenzy

Increase cardiovascular endurance while combining different math skills!

Materials/equipment:
The Zone™ Pocket Cubes (16981-PS)
Colored Cone Set (21049-PS)
Foam Dice (15034-PS)
Skinny Hoops (14029-PS)
The Zone™ Cone Folders (21192-PS)

Objective:
To increase cardiovascular endurance while combining different math skills.

Description of Game:
Students will start by scattering within the gym or playing area. On the signal “Go” students will run around tagging as many people as they can in 30 seconds while staying within the boundaries of the 6 cones. Students may tag someone more than once but never consecutively. Students will need to keep a running tally in their heads of all the tags they make. Students not making a full effort or trying to tag others without running will be told to start their count over at 0.

After the 30 seconds are up students will find the station that corresponds with their number of tags. Ex. Student made 14 tags so they look for the station that 14 will fall under and that would be the station with the sign showing 11-15 tags. Once at this station the student with the highest number of tags is the teacher. If more than one student has the same highest number they roll a dice as a tiebreaker or play RPS. If a student is the only one at the station then they are still the teacher and will wait for students to come to them once the game begins. When a student is the teacher they will stand facing the remaining students and will hold up flash cards one at a time for students to say the answer.

The student who answers correctly gets to leave the group. That student should then go to one end of the playing area and roll the pocket cubes inside a hoop. The two cubes will tell that student an exercise to perform and how many. When they are done they should run and join another group at a different station and attempt to guess the right answer. After 1-2 minutes, place all items in the hoops and get ready for a new round of tag. Students earn a point if they perform an exercise at all 6 pocket cube stations at any point.

Modifications:
Change locomotor movements and tagging rules for other rounds. Ex: after each tag put one hand behind back and when tagged with both hands behind your back perform 5 squats to return to the game. Hold out all 5 fingers and each time you tag someone put a finger away and when all fingers(5 tags) are gone you may become a teacher. Stop when all 6 teachers have been selected. Students can pick which teacher to start with.

Set Up:
Around the perimeter of the gym set up 6 stations, one in each corner and two across from one another in the middle forming a rectangle. Each station will have a hula hoop, a cone, one dice, a sign holder with the range of tags in sleeve (Ex 0-5 Tags) and flash cards. At both ends of the playing area will be 3 hoops each with two pocket cubes in them.

Station Signs:
0-5 Tags, 6-10 Tags, 11-15 Tags, 16-20 Tags, 21-25 Tags, 25+ Tags

Variations:
Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication

I Like to Move It Move It Math

Increase math composing/decomposing skills while being physically active with a partner or small group!

Materials/equipment:
White Boards – Set of 6 (21202-PS)
Skinny Hoops (14028-PS)
Colored Cone Set of 6 (21049-PS)
Alphabet Spots (70061-PS)
Foam Dice 2 sets of 6 (15034-PS)
The Zone™ Cone Folders Set of 6 (21192-PS)
Big Digit Timer (48025-PS)

Objective:
To increase math composing/decomposing skills with partners.

Description of Game:
One student at a time from each group will take turns being the leader and go to the center and select a number card and bring it back to their group. As a group they must use their whiteboards and write down as many different combinations of numbers they can use to get to the number they selected on their card.

When the leader brings the card back he or she will share the number with the group. The group will then run one lap together around the outside of the playing area. While running their lap they should be starting to think of number combinations to write down. Students can share with one another out loud or wait until they all return to their home spot. When they return they should flip their timer over and begin to share their combinations while the leader writes them down on the whiteboard.

Example: Addition: They have the number 12. Students can write down 6 + 6, 3 + 9, 4 + 8, and so on. Each group will have 30 seconds to complete as many combinations as they can. When they are done or can no longer think of any more number combinations, the group will look at their card and and see what color sticker is on it. That color will determine which exercise station they will go to for their group exercise. If the sticker is red then the student that is the leader will go to the red cone.

Each cone will have an exercise written in the cone folder. The leader will roll the two foam dice, which will determine how many of the exercise they will do. That student will come back to the group and lead the group in their exercise. When finished a new leader will go to the middle and repeat the process.

Set-up:
Divide students into groups of 2, 3 or 4 depending on class sizes and assign them a letter and those students will go that spot. In the center of the playing area will be cards scattered face down. Around the perimeter of the gym will be 6 cones each with a cone folder. Next to the cone will be a hula hoop and two foam dice.

Variations:
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division
